Darryl's Old FAQ (5/1/96)

Darryl Lee FAQ
(Posted in the window of my old office in the Library, May 1, 1996)
Q:
Is Darryl's office still here?
A:
Well, you're standing in front of it, aren't you?

Q:
OK, fine, wise-guy, where's Darryl?
A:
Oh, he doesn't work here any more, got a job up north.

Q:
What? Where? Who? When? Why?
A:
Easy easy, one question at a time:

What:
He's gonna be a Unix system administrator.

Where:
In Mountain View, California (part of "Silicon Valley")

Who:
A small contracting agency named MindSource. They provide temporary (6-12 month) system administrators to bigger companies like Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics.

When:
His last day at the library was April 30. His first day at MindSource is May 8.

Why:
This is a multiple choice answer:
a)
It was real, it was fun, it was even real fun, but it wasn't real profitable.
b)
I heard there was another Darryl on campus (in the MCL), and was afraid that if we ever met it would cause an irreparable rift in the time-space continuum. It wasn't worth the risk.
c)
Don Lubach (Counseling and Career Services) has had his eye on the August spot in the "Computer Hunks of UCSB" calendar ever since Alan Stebbens left. I wanted to give him a shot.
d)
As becky@bap says, there's never enough work around here. :-P

Q:
Wow...Sun, SGI, cool! He's gonna be working there?
A:
No, he's going to be starting out at a place called NCD. They make network terminals and X software and hardware. He'll be doing the same kind of PC systems support he did here at the library, but learning Unix system administration along the way.

Q:
Great, now who am I going to go to for my AS Home-IP problems?
A:
Well, you can first read the FAQ, then you can check the archives of the mailing list. If you still have questions, you can ask the mailing list. Finally, if you're still having problems, it'll probably be easiest to call a consultant or two.

Q:
Just great, now who am I going to go to for library systems problems?
A:
Talk to Rick Worth. This is his office. His e-mail address is worth@library.ucsb.edu.

Q:
But what if I'm Ed McMahon and I need to give Darryl his check for $1,000,000 dollars?
A:
Fine, mail me at lee [at] darryl.com and give me more info. And an autographed photo from Johnny if you've got one.

Q:
Is that all?
A:
Yep.
